Setup and permissions FAQ
Get through approvals fast. This FAQ covers ports, SmartScreen/Gatekeeper, and running PortableMind without admin.
Approvals
Do I need admin rights?
No. Approve once (SmartScreen or Gatekeeper), then run as a standard user.
SmartScreen steps?
More info → Run anyway on the .bat file while it remains on the USB.
Gatekeeper steps?
Control-click → Open or Open Anyway in Privacy & Security for the .command file.
Ports and hardware
Best port choice?
USB 3.x or quality USB-C adapter; avoid unpowered hubs for stability.
Can I use on library PCs?
Yes, if external drives are allowed. Run from the USB and save outputs to it.
Should I keep a spare cable?
Yes. A short, flexible cable protects ports and improves stability.
Policy alignment
How to stay within corporate policy?
Run offline, keep outputs on the USB, and document scoped AV exclusions.
What about DLP tools?
Stay in airplane mode for sensitive work and store outputs locally, not in synced folders.
Need proof for IT?
Provide offline screenshots and this FAQ; show no installs or outbound traffic.
Safety
Is anything installed?
No. Closing the terminal stops the local server; no services remain.
Can I share the USB?
Yes, but track custody and keep sensitive prompt packs encrypted if others use it.
Where to put shortcuts?
Desktop/Dock/Start is fine; they simply point to the launcher on the USB.
