PortableMind Survival Terminal

A hand-built offline command center for the people who want more than a USB stick on a keychain. Screen, keyboard, battery and the same PortableMind brain, sealed into a 3D-paneled case that lives on your desk or in your go-bag for years.

PortableMind Survival Terminal prototype in hardened enclosure

Overview

Survival Terminal · Limited run

The Survival Terminal is our hand-built, all-in-one offline AI rig. Same brain as the PortableMind USB, but installed in a dedicated enclosure for people who want a permanent "AI war room" on their desk. Built in limited runs, assembled and tested one at a time.

  • Hand-built limited runs
  • Ships within ~8–12 weeks of your order when ordering is open
  • Fixed spec · one configuration per run (no custom options)
  • Upgrade path · same offline brain as the USB, tuned for future firmware drops and hardware add-ons
  • Offline by design · fully local, no cloud dependency

Units are built and tested in small runs. When ordering is open, expected shipping is roughly 8–12 weeks from your order. Availability is limited per run.

If you just want offline AI on any PC or laptop, the PortableMind USB is the best place to start. The Survival Terminal is for people who want a dedicated box on the desk, ready whenever they reach for it.

What you get

  • A finished Survival Terminal rig with integrated display, keyboard, pointing device and storage
  • The full PortableMind offline AI stack, preloaded and tested
  • Firmware tuned for reliability first, built on the same "just works" behavior as the USB
  • Clear ship targets for each run (typically ~8–12 weeks once your unit enters production)
  • Ongoing firmware updates as they ship, so the box keeps getting smarter instead of going stale on a shelf

Stack & specs

A permanent offline war room

The Survival Terminal is the "leave it on the shelf until the lights go out" version of PortableMind. Same local models and tools as the USB, but pre-installed on a dedicated box with its own display, keyboard and power. No setup, no drivers, no "did an OS update break my stack again?" You open the lid and it is ready.

This run is deliberately small. Each unit is built and tested one at a time, then layered with new capabilities as they clear real-world testing. The goal is simple: a box that feels overbuilt on day one and more capable every time the firmware moves forward.

Compute

  • PortableMind firmware preloaded for offline use with the same brain as the USB.
  • Local text models with survival-first and expert modes, tuned to this rig.
  • Fixed stack: hardware, OS, and models locked together for reliability.
  • Firmware updates add capability without introducing cloud dependency.

Power

  • Internal battery sized for hours of offline work.
  • Runs from wall power or a capable power bank when you need longer.
  • Physical power and safe-shutdown controls to protect storage.
  • Designed to wake after months on a shelf and stay stable during outages.

Enclosure

  • Custom 3D-paneled enclosure with routed cabling and protected internals.
  • Integrated display sized for real work, not just a status light.
  • Low-profile keyboard and pointing device fixed into the layout.
  • Prototype-forward finish: visible assembly, intentional scuffs, overbuilt on purpose.

Built to grow past launch

Between now and when your unit ships (typically ~8–12 weeks from your order when ordering is open) I'm actively pushing hardware and firmware experiments: GPS, long-run battery options, smarter thermal tuning, and extra tools that make this feel like a true field console instead of a laptop in a case.

Anything that's stable and repeatable by ship time lands in the base spec for the run. Anything that doesn't clear that bar stays on the roadmap for later firmware or a future run.

Short version: this isn't a toy. It's a small run of real hardware, treated like an art piece that also happens to keep working when everyone's Wi-Fi dies.

Is this for you?

Perfect if you want…

  • You want a dedicated offline AI command center that lives ready to go.
  • You are comfortable with prototype finish and visible assembly.
  • You prefer owning the stack instead of renting cloud AI.
  • You want a rig tuned for outages, bad signals, and long shelf life.
  • You understand limited availability and small-run hardware.

Probably not for you if…

  • You just want to try offline AI once—start with the PortableMind USB.
  • You hate prototype quirks or visible screws.
  • You need polished Apple-factory finish.
  • You cannot wait ~8–12 weeks for a hand-built unit.
  • You expect mass-produced inventory and instant delivery.

Why not just buy the USB?

The USB is the default path. It's cheaper, it runs on almost anything, and it's built to travel.

The Survival Terminal is for people who already know they're in this for the long haul. You're not buying a thumb drive; you're buying a dedicated machine that's wired, cooled and tuned around one job: stay ready when the network isn't.

Each run locks in a very specific spec so it can be over-optimized: same enclosure, same internals, same panels. That's how firmware can push harder, experiment with things like GPS, mesh and long-run power, and still stay stable. Start with the PortableMind USB.

Questions, answered.

Is this just a USB in a case?

It runs the same offline stack as the PortableMind USB but arrives preloaded and hardened in a briefcase terminal. The USB is the right starting point for most people.

Does it need the internet?

No. Local models only—no logins, no subscriptions. It is built for grid-down and degraded networks.

How long does the battery last?

An internal battery keeps it running for hours, and you can feed it from wall power or a capable power bank when you need longer.

What happens if you fail to ship within the 8–12 week window?

If I miss the promised ship window, you get a refund. Once your unit enters production, the order is otherwise non-refundable.
